PS3 Owner-Upgrade Successes PLUS PS3 Innards Exposed
Several users have reported success in managing to upgrade their PS3 hard-drives. There are several reports of amateur electronics enthusiasts swapping out the 20GB and 60GB drive with higher-capacity version, all of which were recognised and accepted by the PlayStation 3's OS.

The most remarkable point to this is not that something written in a manual actually does work - although that is remarkable in itself - but how rapidly and successfully it can be made to happen. SPOnG awaits the first online reseller of PS3 upgrade services. If that's you - or if you've seen such a vendor - then tell us in the forum.

We'll bring you updates on what other warrantee-defying PlayStation 3 stuntmen are doing with their recently-procured gaming hardware as it comes in...

The folks at Tech-On in Japan have taken it upon themselves to dismantle their shiny new PlayStation 3, revealing well, have a look for yourself.

Unless you can tell what printed circuit boards do just by looking at them, there's little of huge interest, though it's strangely fascinating to see one of the planets most coveted items stripped down to nuts and bolts.

One surprise to all, especially those wielding the screwdrivers and pliers, was the sheer size of the fan employed to keep the Cell Processor cool. The guffaws from the techno-surgeons and immediate production of a documenting ruler speak volumes...

Calling swapping the hard drive the "First True Playstation 3 Hardware Hack" is a bit misleading for a feature that Sony have documented in the manual, and online!

Still, it is good that Sony are open enough to allow this kind of thing to be done. Shame Microsoft don't allow this. Does the PS3 store your online account settings on the hard drive the same way the 360 does? If so, then this would need to be an upgrade you do right at the start and not after you've been using the PS3 for a while.

Point taken on that one.

Your second point is a valid one - which we'll follow up on.

Many thanks
