Nintendo of America's Reggie Fils-Aime, beloved in the Nintendo community for once saying he was all about asses, has gone on record to state that there will be no more Wii hardware surprises.
Coming days before the US launch of the Wii, a well-executed exercise that has seen pre-orders maxed out across retail channels, Fils-Aime told News.com that there is "...no wonderful secret announcement. At least, not one that I'm aware of so then it would really be a secret."
However, the NOA exec did outline that many elements of the phase one of the Wii's lifecycle were still being worked out. "In terms of what's going to be in the box, that's set. It's going to be the Wii console; everything you need to start playing right from the get-go, a Wii Remote, a Nunchuck, Wii Sports. That's the launch." He continued, "All of the other news if you will, the packaged software, the Virtual Console content, all of that is still being finalised as we speak, though in terms of what you get in the box, that's set."
Fils-Aime also sought to underscore Nintendo's impressive shipping figures, pledging that the 4-million promised hardware units would be available before 2006 strikes out. "We've said all along that we're going to have four million units available for consumers worldwide by December 31st, and we will deliver that number."
Speaking of the shortfall in supply when compared to current demand, Fils-Aime offered, "Here in the Americas, will it be challenging [to buy a Wii through launch period]? Absolutely. But we'll have more product than the 360 had at launch and certainly more product than PS3 will have at launch. So if you use those others as comparisons, it will be easier but by no means should the consumer get complacent."
