Stefan Eriksson, the misunderstood Gizmondo executive, will serve three years in a California State Prison after pleading guilty to charges of embezzlement and being a felon in possession of a firearm. This sees him sidestepping more the serious firearm and two whopping Grand Theft Auto charges brought against him.
Expectations were high that the 'former' gangster would remain behind bars for more than a decade; enough to enable the writers of some website that had written snide things about him get proper grown-up jobs and change their names...
The two embezzlement charges replaced four charges of Grand Theft Auto relating to the now-dead Ferrari Enzo and a Mercedes McLaren SLR belonging to Eriksson's wife.
It was SPOnG which revealed that the car might well be stolen, with Sgt. Phil Brooks of Malibu Sheriff's Department telling us, "There are a lot of questions about ownership [of the Ferrari Enzo]. I have the Bank of Scotland telling me they own it. He brought this car and another Ferrari and an SLR Mercedes through customs. They're all show cars – they're not street-legal. So, there's issues there but that has to do with crimes elsewhere and they're probably more financial." Of course, just weeks later, the SLR was impounded on the streets of LA...
Speaking about the guilty plea, Eriksson's legal advisor, Jim Parkman, stated to reporters last night, "Essentially, it was what Stefan wanted to do. Stefan came to an agreement, and everyone - all parties involved: Stefan, the defense, the DA - took a look at the case and that's where we were at. Stefan had concerns over all; about both the cost and energy of continuing the case. Stefan believes that he can be successful in the future."
We hope this success won't be in being really good at finding game journalists who had the brains to call the police and simply record what they said.
"It was fair resolution, justice has prevailed", commented Deputy District Attorney Tamara Hall, noting that jurors in the case had voted 'guilty' on a 10-2 count. "This plea is consistent with the majority of jurors."
