UPDATERockstar has confirmed the early release to retail of Canis Canem Edit. Speaking to SPOnG this afternoon, a London spokesman for the company explained, "It seemed likely that the game would get onto shelves early so we decided to make it an even playing field for everyone."Two this year’s highest profile titles are to go on sale prior to the previous official October 27th street date, according to UK trade journal MCV.
Football Manger 2007, having already
stormed to the top of the charts was the first to early off its blocks (or out of the tunnel, to maintain the footy theme) is now followed by
Canis Canem Edit.
The games are getting early shelf-time from both Woolworth’s and Choice UK. Sega, the publisher of Football Manager 2007, has already made public comment on its decision to go a bit previous.
It states, “SEGA and Sports Interactive would like to announce that the official street date for Football Manager 2007 on PC / Mac has been brought forward to Wednesday, October 18th. As a result of certain retail outlets ignoring the official release date of October 20th, SEGA and Sports Interactive have acted to ensure that Football Manager 2007 is available to all of our loyal fans. We are in the process of communicating this new date to all of our retail partners.”
Looks like this communication has already occurred then.
Now Rockstar is expected to confirm that it too is trying to minimise the impact that independent, non-chain, retailers could have on its relationships. The best way to achieve this, of course, is to let just such chain retailers off the leash.
SPOnG is awaiting official comment from Rockstar and will go live with it as soon as we get off the phone.
