US-based Terra Soft is shipping a cut-down version of its Fedora Core-based, Yellow Dog Linux to sit obediently on the PlayStation 3 (let's hope it doesn't also roll over or play dead).
According to the company, "In development of Yellow Dog Linux v5.0, Terra Soft integrated and enhanced code from Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Sony Group, and Fedora in order to offer the following:
- kernel 2.6.16
- gcc 4.1.1 and glibc 2.4
- Cell SDK 1.1
- OpenOffice.org 2.0.2
- FireFox 1.5.0 and Thunderbird 1.5.0
- Nautilus 2.14
- ... and a suite of Personal Accessories, Development Tools; Sound & Video, Internet, and Networking applications.
"
The addition of a fully-working operating system is slice of good news for those hungering after positives for the platform, which will not be appearing in PAL territories this side of Christmas (nor even Hanukkah, come to that - we're more than confident to be playing it come NEXT Ram'zan, though).
This particular distro is also rolling-out with an installer aimed specifically at non-tech-geeks.
