Free Yellow Dog Linux to make the PS3 more than a games-box

Linux Distro Dogs PS3
US-based Terra Soft is shipping a cut-down version of its Fedora Core-based, Yellow Dog Linux to sit obediently on the PlayStation 3 (let's hope it doesn't also roll over or play dead).

According to the company, "In development of Yellow Dog Linux v5.0, Terra Soft integrated and enhanced code from Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Sony Group, and Fedora in order to offer the following:

  • kernel 2.6.16

  • gcc 4.1.1 and glibc 2.4

  • Cell SDK 1.1

  • OpenOffice.org 2.0.2

  • FireFox 1.5.0 and Thunderbird 1.5.0

  • Nautilus 2.14

  • ... and a suite of Personal Accessories, Development Tools; Sound & Video, Internet, and Networking applications.
  • "

The addition of a fully-working operating system is slice of good news for those hungering after positives for the platform, which will not be appearing in PAL territories this side of Christmas (nor even Hanukkah, come to that - we're more than confident to be playing it come NEXT Ram'zan, though).

This particular distro is also rolling-out with an installer aimed specifically at non-tech-geeks.

Sony better get their skates on if you are to get the PS3 come Ramzan... especially as Ramzan finishes in about a week!

Tempting... but still not enough to get me into the PS3 yet. I can still throw a linux distro on an old PC and get the same nerdy satisfaction of tinkering with an operating system I have no need for.

It's not the same when you have a huge graphical powerhouse backing it with really cool libraries and development kits and game making tools in it. Any fool can throw Linux on a PC and make it look like Windows, NOT FUN. Not everyone can create 3D shooters in a few weeks like I perceive the PS3 will allow us ot do with a XNA style development kit like Microsoft has. Also, that means we can do really cool stuff with a Next Gen game machine. Like pirate games easier..., kidding...

I'm pretty sure that the only superstition that Sony is timing its release strategy to the festivities of is the great Christo-capitalist buying frenzy that is Christmas.

Hmmm, it'd be nice to think that Sony will expose the PS3's power via a set of libraries for Linux developers... but I wouldn't count on it.

If Microsoft's service takes off, I think Sony has no choice but to.

Christ, I thought it would be Xtianmass 2009 before I could make sense of that sentence.

All this 'ligion is making me itch...

Dude, no matter how many times I re-read it, I can't get it to NOT make sense.

But, given that you were quoting me, but replying to kmogul...
