Infogrames recently confirmed that Alone in the Dark has gone into development on PlayStation 2. The PS2 version is said to have been in progress for several months, and is being developed by Darkworks, the team responsible for the existing PlayStation, PC and Dreamcast versions. PS2’s Alone in the Dark will not be a different game, but will boast the best visuals.

Alone In the Dark, originally released for PC in 1992, marks the earlier days of the survival horror genre and influenced many similar titles, such as Flashback. Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare will undergo a major revamp that will make it the first in the series to be produced using 3D characters and pre-rendered environments. As the last game in this series to be released, the finished article is likely to be affected by the performance and feedback from the previous versions.

The New Nightmare is the fourth in the series that focuses on two lead characters, yet to be named, and concentrates on the controversial subject of western religious philosophy. Whether or not this will affect the launch of the game in some European countries remains to be seen. Provided the game story is tackled carefully and delays are kept to a minimum, Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare is set for a Winter 2001 release.
