Gran Turismo Timeline Glimpsed

PlayStation 3 taking lead over GT Mobile.

SPOnG hoped it had done its part to discredit ludicrous reports which foretold the canning of Gran Turismo 4: Mobile Edition for the PlayStation Portable which sprung up earlier this week. The issue was seemingly brought to light by idiots using machine translations of their first ever issue of Famitsu. This news was illustrated as a further symptom of the PSP being on the brink of destruction after its movie format proved somewhat unpopular.

As we reported earlier, 'Amazingly, it seems that the PSP is teetering on the edge of demise because Polyphony won't commit to a firm release date for GT4M, and a bunch of movie companies are backing away from releasing UMD movies. Before we get into this, let's look at a blog with a suspiciously similar take on the situation. "This latest delay, which is not exactly new, will not only disappoint awaiting fans, but will also probably affect the PSP. This update is considered to be the latest in a number of blows coming PSP's way, following several movie companies' decision to stop producing UMD Videos for the handheld," says PSPUpdates.'

Polyphony moved to quash these claims, releasing a statement reading, "We can categorically deny all speculation which suggests that PDI is not developing a GT franchise game for the PSP. In fact, we've reached the stage where a GT4 equivalent runs on the PSP hardware. However, our main focus at present, is the development and release of a GT title for the PS3 platform. Once this has been completed, we can return to, and jump-start, development for the PSP version. In regards to release dates and details, we'll be making further announcement, at a later date."

Which, reading between the lines, will see Gran Turismo HD - the Prologue equivalent for the new PlayStation - ship first and be followed by GT Mobile. We can then begin what we can only assume will be a long, long wait for the final and complete version of Gran Turismo 5.

Perhaps the lesson to be learned by Sony from all of this is not to offer release dates it has little hope (or even any intention) of reaching in order to lure consumers into adopting a console on day one. For the record, Gran Turismo Mobile was originally promised to PSP first-round buyers in December of 2004...
