PlayStation 3 1080p Games a Long Way Off

Launch range unlikely to target HD.

Posted by Staff
According to reports cropping up on various sites today, Sony's PlayStation 3 launch range is unlikely to feature any software running at the high-definition 'Holy Grail' standard of 1080p, with SCEE representatives seemingly confirming Gran Turismo HD is the only title running at top spec.

Sony deflected fire last week with the mention that both PlayStation 3 hardware variants will support 1080p. Rumour (which we ignored) claimed that Sony was not going to include HDMI cables as standard and the entry-level PS3 would not support the resolution. This proved false. Although HDMI cables would not be bundled, 1080p via preferable, and certainly more common component cables, was possible from both machines.

As things turn out, much of the PlayStation 3's game content is unlikely to be presented in 1080p for a long time to come. As mentioned, Gran Turismo HD reaches the output, but at the time of writing, that's all. Remember that GTHD is simply a tech demo, a re-work of Gran Turismo 4 and not a commercial game release. Sony is expected to make an announcement on what it plans for GTHD (likely to be a freebie on the console's download service) at the Tokyo Game Show next month.

lol...since only 0,05% of HD televisions (the high-end over-priced ones) offer the possibility of 1080p via component cables, this option has no consistancy, in other words you'll have to buy HDMI cables to have the $ony hyped "true HD" lololololololol... again since "much of the PlayStation 3's game content is unlikely to be presented in 1080p for a long time to come" it kind of suck... reminds me of an old Bad Religion song, "lies, lies , lies..."

It's all been a pack of lies, since E3, hasn't it? 1080p in all games - gone. Simultaneous worldwide release - false. We didn't copy anyone - bullshot.

Rats and sinking ships. Time to bail.

show us where sony ever said that all games were going to be 1080p. Ive watched that presentation quite a few times and no one from sony has ever said that all games would be 1080p. All they have ever said is all games could be 1080p capable if the developers felt like.

Further more 1080p is capable via component. there is nothing stopping anyone from pushing out 1080p on component.

But they did IMPLY that if you wanted "TRUE HD" you would have to get a PS3. This was of course intended to make the 360 seem weak by comparison. Now the only thing they have is higher res GT. HA! I once played GT2 in 480p on a dreamcast, and they baby only cost me 200 brand new. Upscalling old games does not impress anyone. Hell, the ps2 displays GT4 in 1080i. So the ps3 is twice as fast then is it? ;) j/k

Anyway, tis just sad. Makes me want to go home and hug my 360. Can't wait for the Wii too. Between those and my DS I have way more games than i can ever get through. Good times indeed.

Though i would like to get a hold of MG4, i'm sure gears of war and mass effect will more the satiate me.

If I've got a TV capable of supporting 1080P, I'm as sure as hell not using the bundled cable that comes with the PS3. $600 PS3 with a $10 000 TV, lets use the s**tty $10 HDMI cable included. A decent set of AV cables will run you $20+ a foot, and thats not even high end...

Making fun of Sony is like making fun of say Paris Hilton. Everyone does it and nobody ever says anything funny about it. Yes yes, we all know Sony has like 290 different VDs, we get it, the machines a cumdumpster. Anyone wanna take shots at the RIAA, the Spice Girls, or George W. with such mindblowing insights like he can't spell and he sucks.

Let's not do this folks, I kept my 360 bashing to a minimum. Although I am worried about the future status of the PS game franchise and Sony themselves...

Yeah, but did you see Sony's porno tape? I mean, and I think everyone whose seen the tape will agree with me here...

Sony is a dead f**k. I wouldn't even play with someone elses EyeToy, whats the point, it didn't even look fun. Sony just lay there, even talking on the phone at one point...

The point is not one of protecting Sony's image. They are like Microsoft, although I see Microsoft as a much worse entity. But I digress, all this bashing is NOT healthy. Unless we had something insightful or genuinely funny to say. Not something along the lines of, "Sony is teh suxors and M$ will rule always!" Or the cleverly disguised, "Sony has no good launch games and it's coming out a year later. I won't buy Blu-Ray because HD-DVD looks better... (and I already have a 360, so it'll be better)."

No s**t Sony has no good launch titles! No hardware launch does anymore! It's not a revelation. PS2, X-Box, 360, Saturn, PS1! You name it. Except maybe Dreamcast or Gamecube because they weren't rushed.

All I'm saying is stop the fanboyism or if it's not that, dig deep and come up with a good (err...) dig at Sony or Microsoft or Nintendo.

Owh goody, we've had 3 faulty hardware launches (PS2, Xbox360 and DS) and suddenly it's we don't have any good hardware launches anymore? Talk about extreme generalising, now that's terrible for your health, mental health that is.

It also really stands up to the slimbering potential of the Wii-launch being the best frikking consolelaunch since the SNES or better, EVER! It's more a case that companies who care about good hardware launches are in a minority these days. if we have a passing eye on the DS...which was seriously rushed to counter the PSP.

They're still the exception i believe...let's hope it stays that way for a couple of decades more shall we?

Hardware launch = gamers currently available at launch.

I was not referring to the hardware itself

But to further disprove your agrument, the original X-Box and PSP also had defects. And that's every system pretty much since the launch of PS2. The only real exceptions are the Gamecube and GBA. But those are Nintendo and Nintendo also replaced the faulty DSes free of chrarge.

but most of the time, for example LUPOS's post that you first replied to, people are citing valid reasons for thinking sony are being guff and surely thats all they need. they dont need elegant wordplay, a brilliant joke or any other sugaring in their comment to make it worth saying.

a joke is always welcome, but sony are acting like total f**k ups right now and i dont need to say it in a silly voice to validate my vocalising of that (highly fact-based) opinion.

alliteration

Microsoft did the same things with the 360 I said the same things then. The flopped on a few fronts and we called them on it after it was released. I'm not defending Sony, I'm just saying obvious potshots are really weak. It's like that old adage, opinions are like assholes, everyone's got 'em and they all stink. I do not put myself above this but geez, it gets a little trite.

Just look at all the idiots who try to talk politics. Even Bush can't do it respectably.

Bah, the time to be preaching "peace in our time" was prior to the 360 launch...comes off as blatantly self-serving now(the 360 launch having been flawed, but not fatally so, and safely in the past, Sony showing every sign of an impending botch job, and Nintendo threatening to knock one out of the park)...I'm certainly not convinced you "held back" out of any reason aside from lack of ammunition...making the point that Sony is as pathetically easy to make fun of as Paris Hilton, also probably not a good move...I mean at least I put a little effort into being creative, and you get all pissy about it(the naive arrogance of your "call to rise above" being laughable)...I didn't even say anything bad about Sony or the PS3, aside from an EyeToy reference, which was for fairly obvious comedic reasons.

I certainly don't recall you impressing me as anything aside from a dedicated partisan, if not an out and out fanboy. So your bona fides as a peacemaker are fairly questionable.

As to the "Hur, Hur, Hur, Sony sucks, Hur, Hur" crowd, you ignore them or engage them as you choose, but you don't get your knickers all in a bunch becasue they violate your self-imposed moratorium on cheap shots.
