Anti PlayStation 3 Propaganda Reaches Comedic Frenzy
You might have picked up on recent reports leading you to believe that Sony has conned you and everyone else with claims that the PlayStation 3 will be fully backwards compatible with earlier SCE platform software. You've probably read something about needing an adapter... It all sounds like a bit of a mess.

The amazing non-news doing the rounds right now details how the PlayStation 3 cannot accept PlayStation 1 and 2 memory cards, something we've known since E3 2005. Sony has taken the step of announcing that it will be making available an adapter to enable users to transfer save files from cards to the PS3's hard drive.

For some reason, this has caused outrage in some circles. "PS3 Digs Itself a Deeper Grave, Requires Adapter for Backwards Compatibility" exclaims Gizmodo. The site continues, "In the biggest twist of the year, including last year, Sony has made another bad decision regarding the PlayStation 3. Claims have been running rampant that this console would be able to play both PS2 and PSOne games—it still will be able to, but require an additional adapter that will likely cost a kidney or two."

This spin seems to have been cast aloft as The Truth by many blind followers, a shame given from what SPOnG can see, Sony's only doing good things in the BC field.

If it didn't bother people that they couldn't carry on with their xbox saves when they moved onto 360 then I can't see why it'd bother people with the ps3.

Now that's the wrong attitude to take. It did bother Xbox owners about their saves, just like the joy pad thing and having to rebuy them too. These kinds of memory should always be compatible, even if the pads aren't.

So caught up in Blu Ray, they forgot to add memory card compatibility for previous versions. Not really rocket science to do, is it Sony? Even Nintendo managed this with Wii, so what is your excuse (that ones aimed for MS too)?

Totally lame business indeed.

I was also quite annoyed that there is no way of getting your saves off the xbox and onto the 360.

MS could do with releasing a cable to connect your old xbox to your 360. At least with the PS3 there is a way to do this, its better than nothing.

The anti-PS3 feeling does seem to be escalating. Maybe it'll disapate when it actually launches, but it could be the first sign of the main thing that will actually cause sony to fall from the top spot.... apathy!

People will get tired of sony, and sony will be unable to make Playstation seem 'cool' again amongst the yoot and mainstream audience, and micro$oft (and hopefully nintendo) will be able to capitalise off this.

But back compatability should remain as a nice extra, not a major selling point of a console. You're buying a new console to play their fancy new games, not to continue playing your old ones. Maybe this is a problem with the developers not bringing enough out at launch, which asks players to return to their previously acquired games to get their gaming fix, but with the exception of a few games I'm happy to continue looking forward.

The only instance that back compatability was a major selling point for me was the DS and that's because there were only a few good games out for a long time, so I resorted to buying Ninty's excellent GBA releases.

I believe its an issue around which a huge hoohah is made at launch and then will disapear within a year. I predict that little will be heard about this on the 360/xbox side after november. feel free to call me up on this when I'm wrong.

I'd much rather Microsoft or Sony concentrate they time, money & energy into putting new feature into new consoles,
rather than having the ability 2 play a game i've already play'd to death on my only machine.

The one game I'd want to transfer woudln't work anyway...you can't even transfer Forza saves from Xbox to Xbox...which is just lame...I have two Xboxes one of which is semi-permenantly housed in my entertainment center, the other one travels in my Xbox™ backpack. The files are both too large for standard size memory cards, and locked to the individual Xbox hhd key, for those attempting a work-around (larger memory devices, modding/ftp). The probably is a work-around for Xbox/360 game transfers, as its all USB I believe...

Anyway, this is basically a non-issue. With the combination of LIVE! and upconverted graphics I can see where back compatability managed to become an issue with the 360, but this is really only a big deal becasue Sony touted its back compatability last generation. If this affects sales at all, it is by their own petard they are hoisted, yes?

Yeah, exactly - it's only a memory card adapter, anyway, not the end of the world - it's still possible to transfer saves, which is the main thing.

If you care that much, though, just buy a bloody PS2.

one day, your gamecube/ps2/xbox will die on you, and there will be no brand new ones waiting for you to buy in a shop.

but if your current gen console at the time, all brand new and sparkly, can play these games then the old classics havent become redundant, or confined to buggy butchery on an emulator

i think it should be a feature that is somehow implemented into all future consoles, and done properly. maybe decades from now, when cds are a distant arcane memory, and we all download 10 terabyte games from the toilet with our ears, the need for some special add-on will be there, but come on they couldve made the ps3 be able to take older memory cards

ps3 can wipe your arse and make the tea in terms of technology thanks to sony's techies and one hell of a budget but they couldnt make it use ps1/2 memory cards

lol, i just thought of scotty off star trek whining about power and such when the subject of memory card backwards compatability is brought up

they could at least throw an adaptor in with the ps3 package, that would be the 2nd best thing

and yeah, those MS lads are s**tters too
