PSP to act as PS3 remote control

Latest PSP news update from Comic-Con

If you happened to be attending the comic book geekfest that is San Diego's Comic-Con, which took place over the weekend just gone, you may well have heard some interesting little news nibbles on the PSP, seeping out of the Sony camp at the event.

Perhaps the most interesting news (although hardly surprising) is that the PSP will act as a remote for the PlayStation 3, with, according to IGN, "additional functionality and interactivity."

Well, so far, so sufficiently vague. SPOnG will be sure to speak to all our sources at Sony to see if we can flesh out this news a little this week.

Other PSP news of note at Comic-Con included the rather strange unveiling of movie trailers of movies still coming to UMD, such as Napoleon Dynamite and Office Space - so it seems the format is not quite dead yet?

The PSP's next firmware update this coming Thursday will offer RSS Video feed support for its web browser. The update will also bring PSP gamers a demo of World Tour Soccer 2.

Finally, Sony Connect announced that is in discussion with wireless providers to create more internet hotspots for your PSP to connect easily to the Internet, plus that it is also looking into ways to provide downloadable movies (similar to the music they currently provide), and is currently looking into a system to protect intellectual properties.

It seems the PSP is far from dead after all, despite the brayings of the many DS fanboys of late. Sony were also heavily pimping the forthcoming Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror - due in Europe on 11th August.

With movies such as Napoleon Dynamite and Office Space, I'd say the format's quite dead.

More hotspots can only be a good thing though. I hope Sony manage to sort something out about PSP hotspot connectivity too - I'm not sure if this is still the case, but connecting my PSP to my local Starbucks (I didn't actually go in there, FYI ;)) resulted in loading a T-Mobile subscription page.

If Sony can get a free online service available through hotspots - and I'm not talking about this new PlayStation Spot thing either, I mean online gaming - then we might hit on something. Unless I'm stupid and you can play PSP games online for free via hotspot and it's just the browser that requires fees.

Psha. Office Space is one of the single greatest comedies of the 1990s. perhaps it just doesn't translate to non-Americans because of all the cultural jokes (I assume it's cultural if others don't find it funny, because I have never heard anyone say that they didn't find the movie funny) that are packed in the movie.

Napoleon Dynamite is an aquired taste. It's one of those movies where you like it, or hate it. I've found that it's one of those movies that seems okay at first, but gets better with repeat viewings (Big Lebowski, all the Christopher Guest Movies, and so forth)
