Xbox 360 Pro Bundle Rumour Flares

Price-cut sidestepped

It looks as though the Xbox 360 will sidestep the issue of offering consumers a price-cut this year, opting to tempt buyers away from Sony and Nintendo's new offerings with what has been dubbed the 'Xbox 360 Pro Bundle', a well-equipped 360 console seemingly replacing the Premium Pack.

Due for launch in August in the US, rumours on several well-established message boards, all springing up at around the same time, seem to point to a leak from US retail or distribution sources, following a briefing from Microsoft's Xbox sales team.

The Pro Bundle will, according to claims that should be kept firmly locked away in the rumour cupboard, contain the standard Premium Pack as well as Project Gotham Racing 3, a three month Gold subscription to Xbox Live and 1,250 XBL Marketplace points, all for $399. The pack is dated by sources for release the first week of August.

We'll keep you updated on the situation, but for the record, when contacted Microsoft offered only a 'no comment'.

If that makes it over to the UK, I'm near enough sold on it.

PGR3: $50 list $30.18 used
1250 XBL Points: about $15.63
3 Month Gold Subscription: $20

Making people who wouldn't buy your console at $313 - $333 think they're getting a good deal: priceless.

All prices quoted from Amazon US.

This could be the source of all those "HD-DVD internal drive" rumors as well. People saw the phrase "Pro Bundle" and (wrongly) thought that that meant an HD-DVD drive as well.

This has already been released in New Zealand - it's called the 'Speed Pack' or something. Other retailers are throwing in GRAW for free with the Pro pack. Can't be selling too well...

Dunno about most other places, but in the UK, the 360 is being outsold software units wise by the PSP and the DS.

In the UK, the PC and PS2 fight for first and are so far in front of the rest it's not funny - they usually account for about 60% of the total market between them. The DS and PSP are currently tussling for third, with the DS winning since DS Lite launched, but the gap is narrowing again - the PSP had been in front since its launch. Then come 360 and Xbox and then the rest.

That's a typical week recently, as I said until the Lite launched the PSP was ahead of the DS and on occasion the 360 has popped above the PSP.
