Mizuguchi: REZ 2 Licensing Deal With Sega May Happen

Candid interview reveals potential return

When SPOnG interviewed Q Entertainment chief and former Sega United Game Artists lead developer Tetsuya Mizuguchi, we were slightly unsure as to whether to ask about REZ. This was because the man must be absolutely sick of answering the same questions over and over again.

To hell with it though. For our money, Q Entertainment developing a new REZ game is a no-brainer for all concerned. Sega doesn't want to do it, Q Entertainment does. There is demand from gamers for it. Everyone's a winner.

An extract from the interview detailing the future of REZ:

SPOnG: You must get asked about REZ a lot. Do you feel the game is over-rated?

Mizuguchi: I don't know. I can't say. REZ was one of my favourites. I spent my love and my energy on REZ and it took a long time to create that sort of experience and it was very new at the time - to co-ordinate the sounds into the music. And it was this experience that really helped plan games such as Lumines and games in the future. REZ is my favourite game.

SPOnG: So after the commercial success of Lumines and Meteos, is there a way Q Entertainment will be able to licence the rights to REZ from Sega? Is the relationship good enough?

Mizuguchi: That's a 'no comment' [Laughs, as do several other Q? staff present.]

SPOnG: So have you been speaking about it?

Mizuguchi: Yeah... that's a 'no comment' too. [More laughter] No, no... I'm really interested to make next-gen REZ. I'm thinking about what is the best way, the best answer to me. So I'm thinking about the possibility now.

SPOnG interviews Mizuguchi one-on-one. The setting was intimate and we very much got the impression that talks with Sega for a REZ deal were progressing. Otherwise, the Q man would have simply repeated what he's said on the subject hundreds of times in the past: That Sega owns REZ and that's the end of it.

Don't fall over in shock if a Q Entertainment-developed REZ update is announced in the not too distant future.
