American Idol's Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson provided this year's E3 exhibition with its show-stopping moment when they appeared on the Codemasters stand for the world exclusive showing of the official American Idol and Pop Idol video games for PlayStation 2 and PC.
The star judges' arrival brought mayhem to the show floor as they fought through crowds and a media scrum of national TV crews to greet the E3 show-goers that packed out Codemasters' stand and the aisles.
Paula and Randy played out their roles judging players' performance on the game before engaging in a marathon autograph-signing session. The official American Idol and Pop Idol games are set to launch this winter in the US and UK respectively and enable players to control the voice of a contestant through a full recreation of the hit TV show.
As well as celebrity appeal, Codemasters had one of the strongest game line-ups of the show, covering all bases from football, motor sport and war-themed strategy and action through to online fantasy gaming.
The reveal of the Club Football series' gameplay brought the 17-game series, each headlined by a major football club, acclaim from PlayStation 2 and Xbox players.
The surprise premiere showing of Colin McRae Rally 04, on both PlayStation 2 and Xbox, demonstrated the new title in the 6-million-selling series' incredible open championships, an enhanced handling model, and advanced visual engine.
A new look and new play modes made LMA Manager 2004 a hit too as the best-selling football management game for consoles returns for a new season.
Codemasters also confirmed at the show that Xbox Live! functionality will be included in both LMA Manager 2004 (offering transfer information downloads) and for Operation Flashpoint's multiplayer missions.
E3 also saw Codemasters reveal two major PC titles for 2004: Battlefield Command: Europe at War 1939 - 1945, the most authentic and visually compelling WWII tactical RTS, and Dragon Empires, Codemasters' MMORPG where players can join up in clans to fight for control of the online world's 50 cities in a true player-controlled environment.
Says Mike Hayes, Codemasters' Marketing Director: "This year's E3 was Codemasters' biggest yet with more reveals and headline games than ever before and we're thrilled with the hugely positive reaction we received.
"Paula and Randy's appearance on the stand to premiere the Idols games was an incredible E3 moment – the show floor was heaving with people clammering to see them and the attention from the press was absolutely phenomenal."
