THQ Wireless, a subsidiary of leading videogame publisher, THQ Inc. today announced that it has signed a two year pan-European exclusive agreement with Eurosport to develop a broad portfolio of new sports-orientated games for mobile phones.

This is THQ’s first contract with Eurosport, a leading sports channel, broadcasting via cable and satellite to 54 countries worldwide in 18 languages.

The first games from THQ are scheduled to release this month. Themes for the games will include football, tennis, rallying, motorsports, rugby, skiing, athletics, winter sports and cycling.

Annette Halabi, Director of Communications Strategies and International Relations at Eurosport said: “Eurosport’s on-going strategy is to develop interactive offers for our viewers using our unique technological skills in order to increase the entertainment value of our brand. We have had great success in our mobile-based quizzes and information services which is why the licensing agreement with THQ Wireless is in line with our overall brand strategy. It brings together our expertise in sports and THQ’s skills in the development of mobile games.

“We selected THQ Wireless as our partner for this major new venture because of their professionalism, track record in the development of wireless games and their undoubted respect for and ability to handle branding issues.”

Adam Comiskey, Commercial Director, THQ Wireless said: “I am delighted that we will be working with a world-leading sports brand like Eurosport. We have had considerable success with sports-orientated mobile games – such as MotoGP and Major League Baseball - and our agreement with Eurosport provides an exciting opportunity to develop a new range of innovative and compelling sports games for mobile phone users.”

Players will be able to download the new Eurosport games from designated carriers. Plans are also in hand to make the games available from retail stores. The games will run on all major European GSM phones.
