NiGHTS Fanbase Petitions For Current-Gen Update
5th July 1996. A day that, to a hardcore Sega fan, bears some importance as this was the release date for the Sega Saturn cult classics, NiGHTS Into Dreams. Next year, the game will be seeings its 15th anniversary - so how would you like to see a port of the Saturn original on current-gen consoles?

That's what the NiGHTS fanbase is currently petitioning for - a celebratory website has appeared at NiD15.com asking for support from fans. If enough people sign the page in favour of the porting idea, then it will be pitched to SEGA for consideration.

Bear in mind this is being conducted by the same guys who successfully managed to include NiGHTS in Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing (albeit a flagman role, but you cherish all of your victories), so it could happen yet. Previously, NiGHTS Into Dreams has only seen an updated release on the PlayStation 2, a release that never escaped Japan.

We're up for this. Are you?

They did a PS2 version for the Japanese market. They could easily port that over. It was actually very well done. The graphics were overhauled but were very true to the original, and the game was essentially retextured - the playability was unchanged, as were the game dynamics because under the hood it was the same game. Also, perhaps other commentators would hate me for saying this, but Sega should NOT rely too much on retro gamers and past critical successes. They should be a company of the future, and not use older classics to reinforce their identity because it seems like they do this too often. Sure, for games that haven't been released in aeons, it makes sense (like arcade perfect conversions of some of their lesser known games (Arabian Fight, Sonic Arcade, Daytona USA 2, Outrunners, and G-LOC)). It is just that every few months someone does an article on NiGHTs, and its kind of become the type of cult game that is no longer even a cult game anymore because everyone seems to like reminding us of it. Also, there was a recent Wii sequel too. I, for one, would prefer if they left their old licences alone, especially since they do such a lousy job! Make new games, and release the original, unmodified classics once every 15 - 20 years. It has not been that long for NiGHTs. If they do re-release it, I bet it would be a downloadable Saturn version on Xbox arcade, PlayStation Store, or the Wii Virtual Console. That's the best the fans could hope for, but I prefer to plug in the old Saturn and play my original. I do understand not everyone can do that or even wants to...
