Arch impresario of the bland and the successfully naff, Simon Cowell has got his eyes set firmly on the gaming industry. And a deal is being hammered out with Sony to achieve his plans.
The music mogul has confirmed in an interview with GQ that he is teaming up with Topshop entrepreneur Philip Green to launch a new entertainment company that is labelled “the new Disney,” according to MCV. The venture will involve computer games.
Clearly seeing the megabucks in capitalising in the industry, Cowell said, “I should have had 20 games by now If you’ve got a game that’s worth more than our shows and we’re in 100 countries, something is a bit out of control.”
He’s a bit peeved that Guitar Hero happened without his involvement, however. “X-Factor should have been the initial vehicle to have Activision come to us and say, ‘You’ve got all the [consumer] traffic. Can you help launch Guitar Hero?’” - then later added, “I’d put guitars on my show to get Guitar Hero.”
Green is said to be involved in discussions with Sony to form some sort of Cowell/PlayStation super-alliance (or something). Company CEO Howard Stringer was approached by Cowell to meet with Green over future games.
Green revealed, “I said [to Sony’s board]: ‘Look at what we can do together. you’ve got massive manufacturing capability. You’ve got retail business. You’ve got PlayStation. You’re one of the biggest TV suppliers in the world. [Simon Cowell] is one of the most watched men on TV... Suddenly, people started to say, ‘You’re right.’”
Simon Cowell has dabbled in computer games before, with a couple of Pop Idol games released back in 2003. It didn’t take long before they hit the bargain bin. Let’s see if his new venture is somewhat more successful.
