Despite Charlie Brooker's Gameswipe pulling in 300k viewers, BBC 4 isn't planning to make video gaming a mainstay of its schedule.

A spokesman for the Beeb tells MCV, "Games are unlikely to be a regular feature of BBC Four but we'll almost certainly return to the subject at some point."

Let's see why, with a quick glance at today's ace BBC 4 line-up:

7pm: World News Today - fair enough.

7:30pm: Leeds International Piano Competition - Chopin's Piano Concerto No 1. - Wooooot!

8:30pm: Transatlantic Sessions - folk music FTW!

9pm: The Andy Williams Show - you are seriously taking the p*ss now?

10pm: Kings of Cool: The Crooners - we give up.

So, yeah, good call BBC 4.

The problem, as Charlie pointed out, is that video games aren't considered suitable for TV let alone for a channel like BBC4. Did you see Mark Kermode's little game rant? Or those people playing Wii Boxing on Gameswipe? This is the market served by BBC4.

The problem is that we then get the other end the spectrum, with Sky showing the gaming championships last year. Watching people play games sucks, what Charlie didn't on the other hand was fun and informed, something that is rare on TV in general.

I want to see some stats on who is playing games and a breakdown. While I agree that a lot adults play 'games' I want to see how much of these surveys include a housewife that plays Peggle, or a dad who enjoys a game of Wii golf once in a while - neither would tune in to a show on games but both could qualify as a 'gamer'. I know it isn't all spotty kids these days but I think we get ahead of ourselves thinking games bridge all generations.

Maybe the big obstacle is the word 'game'. I don't care if you play COD or recreate battles using miniatures from Games Workshop - being games places them lower than other forms of entertainment. I'm not saying it's right, just the way it is.
