Okay, there are cross-promotions for a reason and there are cross-promotions for pure, unassailable greed. What follows is the latter.
"MTV Games and Harmonix’s
Rock Band are joining forces with Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Entertainment to celebrate the May 8th theatrical release of the film
Star Trek..."
What? Or more like, "Why?!"
"The first-of-its-kind collaboration will fuse together the massive cultural followings of both
Star Trek and the video game phenomenon Rock Band to engage fans with free music, an in-game battle of the bands, and futuristic avatar creation contest."
Nope. We're still straining like a banker over the face of a working stiff to see any possible link between
Star Trek and
Rock Band.
Must be an April Fool, right? We headed off to the url
included in the press release for details. We were presented with a huge sign saying, "FAILED" and a 404 error.
But the information provided by the PR outlet does appear to be valid, there is a battle of the bands competition on
Rock Band that could see "The band with the highest score will win a STAR TREK hometown movie screening for their band and their friends."
A home town movie screening? Not even a premier screening in LA or Paris or Moscow? Cheap. Cheap and random.
We're now trying to think of other cash-ins...
World of Warcraft and the massive cultural following of Bratz?
FIFA '09 and the massive cultural following of Desperate Housewives?
Imagine Babies and the massive cultural following of Superman?
