Summary

Developers Monte Cristo are specialists when it comes to WWII real-time strategy games. Their portfolio already includes Desert Rats vs. Afrika Korps and D-Day. Now comes the third in the trilogy, the equally explicitly named 1944: Battle of the Bulge. Published by Brit-soft house Digital Jesters, it again uses the Digital Reality engine to bring the Belgian battlefields to life.

The series so far has been known for compelling gameplay coupled with pedantic historical accuracy. BotB is no different, and the level maps have been designed using original strategic maps, geographical information and photographs taken on the battlefields themselves. The ten multiplayer maps have been made using actual official records from the war.

Set in the dead of a north European winter, the game will test would-be generals even more, as they must tackle the snow that affects the mobility of their troops and vehicles. New, snowy meshes and trees have been added to make this look convincing too. Likewise, soldiers and vehicles are equipped with winter camouflage.

3 single player campaigns and 20 single missions allow you to play as either Allied or Axis forces, and up to four players can play online or via a LAN in three different game types. Full 3D graphics bring the historically accurate vehicles to life. 15 new units have been added to reflect the ordnance used in this episode of the war. And stress has been put on emphasising the realism of commanding your troops- with army management and battle preparation prime concerns. A new pause feature allows you to schedule commands for precise execution. Fans of the series are in for the most subtle and detailed experience yet.
