Summary

In an industry that gets more predictable by the day, we're sure none of you were surprised to hear that there was going to be a virtual Euro 2004 offering to tie in with the real-life tournament. And what's even less surprising is the fact that EA is the developer responsible for bringing it to PC and console. But these aren't negatives - footy games are always welcome here, especially when there's a major tournament being held around about the same time.

Though fundamentally the same as any other football game, Euro 2004 does have its own unique intricacies when it comes to control and opponent AI. The differences in control are subtle, but they are enough to make a noticeable difference to the game as a whole. It'll be a shallow learning curve for ardent footy gamers, but that doesn't matter.

What does matter, particularly on this occasion, is how well the player is immersed in the atmosphere of the tournament. Authenticity is important, and thankfully EA has recognised this, giving players the option to partake as any of 51 European nations. Players can engage in friendly matches, play-offs, and of course the Euro 2004 Tournament in full. To add to an already realistic footy game, EA has incorporated injury-tracking, suspensions and a new 'morale' system that, depending on the circumstances, can affect the mood and playing ability of your team.

Euro 2004 was always a destined chart-topper, but where some gain status through media attention and hype, this EA offering should be merited for its gaming value. It's fun to play and that's all the gamer really needs.
