Summary
For older gamers Vaporum will be a welcome blast from the past, for others it will be a first-time introduction to the strange and enjoyable mechanics of grid-based first-person gameplay mechanics. For both groups, it will be an interesting foray into a darkly weird and wonderful steampunk world.
Drawing unapologetically on the legacy of Grimrock, Vaporum is an RPG that has you ascending a dangerous and enemy-filled tower as you fight towards your goal. You'll have a wide array of skills at your disposal thanks to the steam-powered exosuit you'll be wearing. It's all in how you customise your suit - while you'll be married to some of the kit you pick, a lot of the knack of Vaporum is in equipping and using the right loadouts for the right level. Some will offer direct attacks, some will be wider-ranging, some will give you defensive of offensive buffs... the list goes on. You'll also have puzzles to contend with, and while most will be confined to a single room some will span entire levels.
As you go, you'll absorb fumium from fallen enemies that will allow you to access new parts of your rig and thereby unlock new abilities. The way to the top of the tower is in knowing when and how to use them...
