Summary
Past Cure is a game that refuses to be dropped into any one genre box. Blending horror, puzzles, stealth and action, it's a curious and ambitious first outing from new development studio Phantom 8.
You play as a former elite soldier named Ian, a man tormented by his past and desperate to rediscover his lost identity. Playing on Ian's mental torment, the game weaves between reality and a dark nightmare world.
Out in the solid world of hard knocks is where the action happens. Sometimes stealth is the order of the day, but when Ian has to start dealing out the pain the third person cover shooter mechanics are supported by a time manipulation power that enables Ian to slow down time.
When things take a turn for the unreal, however, Past Cure veers into survival horror territory that fans of the Silent Hill series will feel very (un)comfortable with. Here, puzzle solving is the order of the day. If you can keep your wits about you in the face of the dark, horrifying world around you then you might just survive.
It's all told with cinematic panache that moves from the hard hitting to the surreal. All the better for reducing you to a trembling wreck when the scares come...
