Here it is, the first outing for the Metal Gear series post-Kojima, and Konami has certainly made a timely - if appropriately left field - choice for the new game. Welcome to Metal Gear Survive, a blend of stealth, co-op action and (you may have guessed this from the title) survival.

Following hot on the heels of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, Survive sees your player-created character sucked through a wormhole to a parallel Earth overrun with weird, crystal-riddled zombies. Your first order of business in this post-apocalyptic world is to scavenge for the basics you'll need to stay alive - food, water, shelter, you know the drill. You're going to need more than the basics if you want to survive the biological threats and hostile environment you're faced with, though. Scavenged materials can be used to craft weapons, buildings and other useful items, as well as to build a base camp where you can grow crops and rear animals. Don't let this vision of post-apocalyptic pastoral bliss fool you though - all the while you'll be fighting for your life.

Beyond the single-player campaign, you can take the items you've built into a four-player co-op mode. Together with your teammates you'll fight wave after wave of enemies, gathering up loot which you can then take back to the single-player campaign.

It's all built on the same Fox Engine that brought us Metal Gear Solid V, so you know that technically speaking the game has a strong foundation. With the engine come familiar controls and weapons from the mainline series such as Walker Gears (which are just as much fun to kick zombies with as you might imagine) and Fulton balloons.

Metal Gear is entering a bold new era, and Survive is a suitably fun and offbeat way to kick it off.
