Gamers more used to games developed in Europe and North America might be surprised to learn that farm-based role-playing games are a long standing tradition among certain sections of the gaming community. The Harvest Moon series dates all the way back to the SNES and, having jumped around systems a little, has found a natural home on Nintendo's handhelds. Due to rights shenanigans this latest game is called Story of Seasons but, coming as it does from long standing series developer Marvelous AQL, it's a sequel in all but name.

Players begin by arriving at their very own farms and have to get to work by deciding what crops to grow and which animals to raise. As the farm grows they can take part in the town's annual competitions, make their own furniture and even set up a safari for their neighbours to explore. Using the 3DS's online functionality, they can even visit friends' farms!

It's not purely about farming, though. Story of Seasons is about building relationships, too, and maybe even finding your way to wedded bliss! For those purposes, though, you might want to make use of the game's customisation tools, unlocking new outfits as you go and even gaining boosts to things like stamina and health.

There's something here for the entrepreneurial spirit, too, with players able to trade with merchants in exotic locales through the trade depot!

For diehard Nintendo fans there's something a little extra, too. By using mystery seeds, players can grow crops that look suspiciously like famous Nintendo items. A Super Mushroom will immediately grow all the crops in its vicinity, a Fire Flower will scorch out any failing plants and a Super Star will keep them fresh for longer!
