Summary

The Castlevania: Lords of Shadow Collection is a great way for gamers to get up to speed with LoS before they pile into the sequel. There's a bumper crop of content in there.

The main event is the original LoS game. You play as Gabriel, a member of the Brotherhood of Light – an organisation of holy knights tasked with protecting the land from supernatural evil. The mysterious Lords of Shadow now rule this medieval world with its army of dark creatures terrorising the innocent. As an orphan, Gabriel only knows two things – his fight against evil, and his one true love.

Unfortunately, his wife was brutally murdered by the vicious beasts that he fights, so it's obvious what Gabriel has to do. In challenging the Lords of Shadow himself, he seeks to see his wife – trapped in limbo, tormented by what has happened – once more and hopefully bring her, and the world, back to life.

You'll be battling Lycans and goblins against a beautiful representation of a twisted Southern Europe in the Middle Ages, and while the combat has become the core focus of the action, you are still able to use Gabriel's cross as a whip to rappel down cliffs, swing from ledges and perform some serious platforming. Add the development insight of Kojima Productions, and you have one exciting reinvention of a series dear to many people's hearts.

Players also get a download voucher for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate HD. Mirror of Fate is a platformer for the Castlevania faithful that harks back to the franchise’s classic NES days, playing out across two dimensions. You even play as 8-bit protagonist Simon Belmont, whip and all, in a storyline that takes place generations after his ancestor Gabriel’s initial spiral into darkness.

While the game is as action-heavy as its bigger console brother, there are plenty of areas that require some pause for thought and the solving of some basic puzzles. Mercury Steam also builds on the traditional 2D Castlevania formula, adding a backtracking element that is reminiscent of Nintendo’s own Metroid franchise.

On top of that, there are also download codes for the Reverie and Resurrection DLC for LoS, as well as early access to the LoS 2 demo!
