Summary

Ever wondered what would have happened if a rogue virus had warped the populaces of Russia and Europe, over-running the Eurasian land mass with a swarm of monstrous mutants by the 1950's? Sure you have! You sick, sick puppy...

Lucky for you, then, that Sony's Resistance: Fall of Man explores that exact scenario. With Europe and Asia brimming with nastiness, it falls to Britain and the United States to try and stem the tide of evil and save the day. To this end, you must step into the hard-worn boots of Sgt. Nathan Hale and take on the Chimera, armed with only your organic slime mine launcher and a heavy dose of grit. You'll join the frontline of the battle alongside the British as you work to uncover the secrets of the Chimera and of Hale himself. Oh, and you might want to shoot some things too.

At first glance, you might mistake this for a Call of Duty or Medal of Honor, what with the grim setting. At second glance there's not much chance of repeating the mistake. The Chimera come in a huge range of inhuman-type ugliness, and you'll be called upon to use a myriad of different tactics to take them down. Different tactics means a selection of weapons, and these range from sniper rifles that can slow down time, to cannons that whip out needle-like subsonic bolts.

The story doesn't end with Fall of Man, though. Picking up the story from the closing moments of the first game, Resistance 2 continues the tale of an alternate post-war 20th century where civilisation is rapidly being crushed as the savage Chimera virus turns the populous into monstrous mutant creatures. In the first game, Resistance: Fall of Man, players took control of Nathan Hale, a US soldier deployed in England, in an epic first-person shooter coupled with a intriguing story. Infected with the virus, yet miraculously able to hold its ravages at bay, Hale benefits from the super-strength it lends him, becoming almost a one-man army in the battle to fight against the Chimeran attack from Russia.

In Resistance 2, players once again take the point of view of Hale. He's been evacuated from London to an Icelandic outpost to continue the struggle against the Chimera, which are now making a concerted push across the Atlantic. No longer alone, Hale is accompanied by a band of brothers similarly infected. Known as Sentinels, through many missions they provide assistance with their heavy weaponry and brute force. Hale and the team must staunch the Chimeran onslaught through many missions set across mainland USA, where once treasured vistas are blitzed from the skies by vast enemy battleships.

Thankfully, weapons research has delivered new hybrid firepower befitting of a epic fight. In addition to the Carbine and Bullseye from the original game, there are new heavy weapons including the Wraith minigun and a plasma cannon - instrumental in the defeat of a new breed of Chimera, like the water-borne Kraken or the 10-storey Leviathan. The real terror comes, however, in the desolate towns and quiet forests, when the game takes a turn toward the "survival horror" genre.

With two games and a good old chunk of DLC, the Resistance double pack has plenty to go at.
