Summary

Once upon a time there was a game called Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat for the GameCube. In that game, you had to guide Donkey Kong across side-scrolling platform levels. Sounds fairly par for the course, but it came with a twist – you controlled DK using bongos.

Fast forward a few years and Nintendo is bringing back some 'Cube classics under the New Play Control! moniker. What that means is that the bongos are gone and you're now charged with controlling DK using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. For once, the Wii version actually produces a more traditional control system for a game. Bongo hits and claps into the microphone are replaced with button presses, analogue movements and the occasional wiggle of the remote to utilise DK's once all-powerful clap move and knock out enemies and pick up bananas.

This might sound like a step back, but what gamers who found the original overly simple will discover is that the new control scheme actually makes for a tighter rein over DK's movements, creating a more complex game.

The game still features the classic level layouts and enemies of the original, and players will find themselves going up against everything from electric jellyfish to sleeping chicken-headed cactus monsters.

If you never cared much about playing the bongos, give this a shake.
