Summary

We might look back at the olden days through rose-tinted spectacles, but it wasn't always easy.

The year is 1404 and King George's land is suffering. Droughts and famine are rife, and King George knows something dramatic needs to be done. With that in mind, the King turns to his two sons, Edward and William. While Edward sees conflict as the means to gathering new resources, William seeks a more peaceful solution. So it is that players journey to the South to discover the mysterious culture of the orient.

Create a New World is the Nintendo platform outing for the Anno series, and Keen Games hasn't pulled any punches. After you set sail, you'll find yourself exploring new lands, settling them and, ultimately, building cities. It is, essentially, a deft blend of real time resource management and strategic city-building.

As with any real settlement, the most important element is... settlers! You'll need them to pay taxes, produce goods and keep the wheels of the economy rolling along. A productive settler is a happy one, so you'll need to start with their basic needs such as housing and food, before moving on to more advanced elements of civilisation such as culture and establishing places of worship.

There's plenty more to it than that, however. Specialist characters can jump from island to island, engaging in tasks from ocean exploration to pirate battles to treasure hunting to establishing trading posts.

It's all presented in a soothing visual style that will make those new to the genre feel right at home – a style that could almost have been rendered by Nintendo itself.
