From the look of the first ball of the first test of the Ashes series in Brisbane, anybody can do a better job of managing the England ‘team’ than Duncan Fletcher. Here’s your chance with ICC 2006 Ashes Edition. And with Jonathan 'Aggers' Agnew to help you along with his eminently satisfactory in-game commentary, you shouldn't really be able to bowl a wide.
ICC 2006 Ashes Edition is replete with exactly the depth and marvelous choice of options that a half-way decent number four batsman or a good medium pace, second-line, swing-bowler should present. Not only can you plan your way through the 2006 Ashes series in Australia, once (if English) you've got over the shock of that, you can also revisit previous series.
OK, so that's going to be the 1981 Australian tour to England (e.g. Headingley) or the 2005 Australian tour to England (e.g. 'The Greatest Ashes, like, Ever!') - but watching an animated Alan Border cursing should warm the hearts of any real cricket fan.
Aside from the Ashes itself, you've also got the opportunity to play through every scheduled Test match and One-Day International tournament; the full English domestic season including the County Championship for the top two divisions, plus the Twenty Over Cup and Challenge Cup. Like any decent sports management sim, you control transfers and teams selection - including finding new wonderkids and negotiating them into your dream team.
The real kicker ('thrower', maybe?) is the control over players during gameplay. Live action tweaks enable you to alter field positions and batting and bowling approaches and actions. In fact, you can totally stuff the entire team up on a whim, just like real cricket managers.
Once you've got through the DVD of the 'Greatest Ashes, like, Ever!' that comes with the game, you can of course go online and indulge in multiplayer games lasting up to four days!
