Summary

Have you ever thought what would have happened if the Soviet Union had invaded West Germany in 1962? No, thought not, but Empire Interactive obviously has with their PC release entitled Wings Over Europe - Cold War: Soviet Invasion (WOE).

WOE focuses on accessibility rather than over-complication, like many other combat flight simulators. This simply means that gamers can take to the skies and shoot down some Russians immediately. There are three campaigns that take place in 1962, 1968 and 1972 respectively, all concerning the USSR at war with NATO. Gamers assume the role of an elite fighter pilot, taking control of 12 of the best jet fighters from the last 40 years including the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom, the A-10 Thunderbolt II 'Tankbuster', the F-100 Super Sabre, F-15 Eagle and F-105 Thunderchief. Only you can make the skies over Western Europe safe again. WOE offers 13 different Cold War era aircraft, including multiple variants of the Soviet MiG. As a reflection on both the technology and aircraft of the time, gamers must depend more on visual targeting than on long range sensors and radar. After completing each campaign you will be given various decorations, promotions and awards.

WOE offers various different game modes, including 'Instant Action', 'Single Mission' and 'Campaign'. These modes should keep even the most ardent combat flight simulator amused. There are also multi-player and LAN co-op missions or one-on-one dogfights for up to 16 players to get their teeth into. Another feature is that gamers can design and upload their own skins, terrain, aircraft, campaigns, missions and editors on the internet.
