Summary

Are Wild West games the new World War II games? We’re all for a trend allowing us to live out our childhood dreams as gunslingers in the untamed west. And we’ve now seen two such efforts in as many months, with October 2005 seeing the release of Darkwatch, a cowboy sim with added vampires.

Now Activision has its own outlaw offering, and the good news is it’s developed by Tony Hawk people Neversoft, and written by a proper Hollywood screenwriter, Randall Jahnson, the pen behind The Mask of Zorro’s sword.

Gun follows the adventures of Colton White. Poor old Colton pays the price for living on the wild frontier by losing everything he once held dear. And having done so, he does whatever anyone else would do in a land chock full of guns and horses – he goes on a rampage in search of the outlaws who need to be taught a lesson.

There’ll be plenty of ‘reckons’, ‘d’you hears’ and ‘Yee-hahs’ as you take to your trusty steed and roam the great American wilderness, a sprawling and varied environment full of canyons, mountains, plains, forests, goldmines and towns, each with its own saloon for drinking, gambling and fighting.

With access to six-shooters, shotguns, gatling guns, arrows, hatchets and explosives, you undertake a mission-based quest to rid the west of all types of scum. Be they cattle rustlers, deputies or the dreaded ‘Injuns’, nobody is safe from the vengeful trigger finger of Colton White.

Hang around with whores, play poker, or get up to more energetic activities like robbing trains, collecting bounties and murdering buffalo, a-stealthing and a-shooting as a-appropriate. You may be too old to dress up as a cowboy these days, but that doesn’t mean you can’t savour the taste of the west, and - if you like - try to win it.
