Battlefield 2: Special Forces - PC

Once upon a time, fans of action war games had to choose. Did they want to play an FPS as an infantryman? Was a tank driving game more their style? Or perhaps they wanted to take to the skies as a fighter pilot? Then Stockholm based developer Digital Illusions did something that made everybody kick themselves, and in 2002 released Battlefield 1942.

BF1942 allowed you to roam the battlefields of the Second World War, piloting aircraft, jumping into tanks, or sneaking around on foot. What it sacrificed in realism was more than doubly made up for by the amount of fun to be had, and it made DI’s name, not to mention a lot of money for happy publisher EA.

After a raft of expansion packs, sequels were inevitable, and after the war film homage of BF Vietnam, Battlefield 2 brought the game into the modern era, inventing a modern day conflict between Americans, Chinese, and a new Middle Eastern coalition.

Now the game is to get its own expansion pack to satisfy the ever-hungry PC FPS community: Battlefield 2: Special Forces. Pretty explanatory, though we must say the concept of shadowy covert ops fits the secretive politics of our times more neatly than anything as vulgar as a full blown World War.

Special forces gives you the choice of joining six new forces – the Navy SEALS, Spetznas, Chinese special forces or our very own SAS, not to mention Rebel and Insurgent factions.

Get sneaky as you try out new weapons like disorienting flash bang grenades and tear gas, or live out fantasies with grappling hooks, night vision goggles and zip lines. There are 8 new maps, which focus on the secret war side of things with large indoor sections, and 10 new vehicles are generously thrown in, too including the rather special Apache Longbow chopper. BF is all about the online game, and provision is made for online battles for up to 64 would be assassins. Should keep them happy.
