Summary

With four games under its belt already, the question of what Vicarious Visions can do to bring something new to the fifth game for the Nintendo handheld has to be asked. But fear not, would-be skateboarders, as Underground 2 for GBA is every bit as fulfilling as its predecessors and more.

As with the first Underground game, this skating adventure affords players an unprecedented level of customisation and a comprehensive library of grind, lip, manual and special tricks. The multiplier score system remains intact, as does the ability to link moves together through a simple 'revert' trick. It's a game of pure skill. Additionally, skating acrobats can now take advantage of a new Focus Control element that sees play slow to bullet-time speed in order to complete combos more easily. However, Tony Hawk veterans may feel this makes the game simply too easy, so developer Vicarious Visions has offered the facility to disable this new feature.

Another addition to the basic Tony Hawk play mechanic is the Tantrum feature. Remember how frustrating it was to throw away thousands of points and multipliers because of a bad landing? Well now players can gain half their points back by sending skaters into a tantrum. This is achieved by hitting a randomly determined combination of buttons after a bad fall, and it works surprisingly well.

With special guest skaters, graffiti design options, mini-games, and that oh-so familiar gameplay, Tony Hawk's Underground 2 takes the best out of earlier games in the series and uses it to create a brand new, captivating and complete chapter in the Neversoft series.
