Summary

Widely known for its hardcore adventures and RPGs, publisher GMX always has a steady stream of worthwhile games in the pipeline, especially for the PC platform. Next up is Seal of Evil, an epic adventure set way back in 476BC that bears witness to Warring States period of Chinese history.

Combining ancient legends and mythic storytelling with historical fact, Seal of Evil sets the stage for a great journey wherein players struggle to thwart the Qin invasion of their peaceful homeland, East Baiyue.

A thoroughbred RPG at its core, Seal of Evil is game destined to be played by those fond of Icewind Dale and the likes. As the screenshots will attest, this adventure is played from the classic isometric point-of-view, affording an immense level of detail in the game's varied locales as well as some beautifully animated creatures and special effects.

The play mechanic behind Seal of Evil is fundamentally defined by five unique elements. They are Metal, Wood, Earth, Water and Fire, and influence everything at the heart of the adventure. The combat system, magic, upgrades, skills, equipment, weapons and even puzzles all have a degree of involvement with the elements that be.

Each of the five playable warriors have their own set of skills attributed to them, and in addition to the traditional means of advancement through gaining experience points, skills can be improved in detail with the help of the five elements. There are also other ways to gain some of the game's lesser known or rare skills, but finding them all is a daunting task at best. However, it is one that RPG followers will relish.

Seal of Evil is a complicated RPG, but it's extremely well balanced, and a pleasure to play.
