Summary

Japanese developer Koei, a company known for its diversity in games (Gitarooman, Pacific Theatre) is probably most famed for its territorial combat series, Dynasty Warriors. Coming on the back of four fully-fledged instalments, Koei has now brought us Dynasty Warriors 4: Empires, an epic combat game that pits players in the middle of feudal China as they struggle to create their own empire and force neighbouring opposition into submission.

Taking a glimpse at the bigger picture, Ancient China is now segregated into 24 regions and it's your goal to unify all of them under a single Kingdom - namely yours. Simply start with one region and choose another to invade. Set your battle strategy and then approach the battle with your sword held high and your allies in tow. If only it were that simple...

Indeed, China is a massive land, and your enemies are formidable. You'll have to get to grips with the game's in-depth - but sensible - combat system, as well as new "officer" abilities and Charge attacks. There's no sure-fire way to guarantee victory over your enemies, but knowing the game inside out offers a major advantage. It takes a little time and effort, but the rewards are worth it.

Although Empires is a stunning game, and one that is very pleasurable to play, the game's biggest improvements have only come as a result of Koei listening to its consumer's criticisms of past games. This is perhaps the best advice a software company will ever receive. They've listened to what the public wants from Dynasty Warriors, and it shows in Empires.
