Industry giant Electronic Arts has placed a lot of emphasis on its EA BIG games over the past few years, with games such as SSX proving immensely popular. The company has also focused its efforts on street sports, and new for 2004 is NFL Street for GameCube.

Developed by those behind the long-running Madden NFL series, NFL Street is as technically accomplished as its EA Sports counterpart. A game similar to rugby in some respects, EA’s latest offering comes complete with all the standard rules and attributes that any other representation of the sport offers. But ditching its attempts as a thoroughbred simulation, NFL Street gives a light-hearted arcade feel, boasting street environments and players with attitude.

Gamers have the option to assume control of any of 300 of the sport’s biggest stars in a pick-up-and-play offering that is remarkably simple to get to grips with. The controls are intuitive and avoid frustrating players with an over-complicated play mechanic – something difficult to achieve with virtual body-contact sports.

As a game, NFL Street presents itself with a variety of game modes, including NFL Challenge and Pick Up Game, and is visually impressive. Gaming locales are varied, and character models and facial features have been deliberately exaggerated, reinforcing NFL Street’s stance as a hardcore arcade sports game.

NBA Street was a fun game, and the same applies to NFL Street. Expect much more in this vein from EA BIG.
