Summary
There's a lot more than initially meets the eye in EA's Total Club Manager 2004. Yes, the clue to the game's content lies in the name, but EA - ever the innovator - has come up with the fab idea of Football Fusion. This means you can import data from Total Club Manager to FIFA Football 2004 - create and manage the ultimate team of superstars, share the data, and then you get a 'hands-on' with them in the FIFA game. Brilliant concept, say we.
But first you'll have to prove yourself as a club manager, and those of us who have been here before with other footy management games will know pretty much what to expect. Luckily for us wannabe Wengers and Ranieris, the inevitable deluge of stats and screens is not too overwhelming, and finding your way around the PC version is fairly easy.
The pressures of modern management in football are manifold, and EA try to portray the ups and downs with a deal of authenticity. Your managerial responsibilities include buying and selling players in the most realistic transfer market to date; creating your own training sessions; disciplining players or granting them bonuses; dealing with national media and, very important this, keeping the fans happy.
Gamers can choose the team they wish to take control of from 50 leagues, including the best that England, Scotland, France, Germany and Spain have to offer. As usual, everything and everyone in Total Club Manager 2004 is the real thing, thanks to EA's publishing power. In the PC version, authentic stadia can be modernised to accommodate more fans should the need arise, and everything's viewable in full 3D, from customising your ground to watching the highlights of your matches.
An ideal companion to FIFA Football 2004 in many ways, Total Club Manager 2004 is a total triumph. And it's got jumpin' Martin O'Neill on the cover too!
