Summary

Once a massive phenomenon, Power Rangers graced Saturday morning TV for years before branching out into video games with the help of THQ. Light Speed Rescue, Time Force and Wild Force were all popular titles with fans of the spandex-clad super heroes, and late 2003 sees the release of Ninja Storm for Game Boy Advance.

When an evil ninja master and his minions threaten to plunge your home planet into chaos, the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers are called in to help avoid a seemingly inevitable catastrophe. It will become immediately apparent, particularly to veteran games players, that Ninja Storm employs old-school beat-em-up gameplay from around the 16-bit era.

Looking suspiciously similar to Shinobi in terms of style, players must wander the 2D scrolling locales whilst fending off myriad ninja henchmen in the progress. Power Rangers come equipped with an array of ninja-like abilities and special attacks, with which they must reach the end of each level. And in true Power Rangers style, the end of the game sees their powers combine to form a giant Megazord capable of defeating your mysterious and formidable opponent once and for all.

Ninja Storm looks rather nice, and is comparable to most other side-scrolling adventures in a visual sense. There’s a wide variety of gaming environments that range from city streets to ninja-infested jungles and the animation is reminiscent of several other 16-bit outings.

Power Rangers fans are gonna love Ninja Storm, whilst old school beat-em-up veterans will be able to indulge in a little nostalgic pleasure.
