Summary

We’ve seen literally thousands of racing games appear over the past ten years of gaming, spanning several generations of platforms. But for some reason, racing games involving Monster Trucks are few and far between. One of the most popular was the PC’s Monster Truck Madness, and with the Game Boy hardware now capable of throwing around 3D objects, the game is now coming to a handheld near you.

This particular version of the PC racer lets players burn tread in as many as 10 high-performance Monster Trucks, each boasting a unique set of attributes that affect speed and handling greatly. When racing through the game’s hostile environments, it’s a good idea to pick a single truck and practice until you’ve become accustomed to the way it handles. Fortunately, the game’s play mechanic is very simple, with buttons for accelerate and brake and a d-pad for steering. You can’t ask for anything simpler than that.

Monster Truck Madness offers a very respectable 30 courses, complete with destructible objects such as fences and crates, and trucks can crash and burn in a very realistic manner. There is even real-time damage, a feature that many 128-bit games miss altogether. To put a thrilling twist on an otherwise standard racing affair, the addition of weapons has between included, a la Mario Kart. However, instead of throwing turtle shells and banana skins, you’ll be using bombs, glue and nitro. Hardcore stuff.

Amazingly, Monster Truck Madness for GBA is a fine interpretation of the PC original. Perhaps even a little better.
