Summary
The concept of recreating events of WWII is becoming increasingly common within the world of video games, and even more so on the PC in particular. The latest title to do so focuses on the aeronautical side of things, casting players as a member of a secret squadron of elite pilots and presenting them with a variety of air-to-air and air-to-ground missions amidst the turbulent skies of the War.
Secret Weapons Over Normandy spans a period of four years - a time when domination by the Third Reich seemed increasingly more likely. That is, if it wasn't for a series of infamous air battles, which helped swing the balance of power back in the favour of the Allied Forces. Which is where you come in, as you take to the skies in an assortment of legendary aircraft, working your way through a historically accurate timeline of key conflicts. Beginning with the evacuation of Dunkirk, the game takes you through the Battle of Britain, Germany's planned invasion of England, the Battle of Midway, and concludes with the most famous of skirmishes, the D-Day invasion. The whole thing takes place over 15 unique combat theatres, including Europe, the Eastern Front, North Africa, China-Burma-India, and the Pacific.
As you would expect, the game sports a healthy roster of famous Allied, German and Japanese aircraft and, as such, gives you the opportunity to get behind the controls of such flying machines as the twin-engine P-38 Lighting, the P-51 Mustang, the rather unstable Me 163 Komet, and the first ever jet fighter in combat, the Me 262 Turbo. Alternatively, if you'd prefer to concentrate your efforts more on the shooting of stuff, then you can also take the gunner's seat in a B-17 Flying Fortress.
Unfortunately, and rather surprisingly for this day and age, the PC version of Secret Weapons Over Normandy has no support for multiplayer gaming, via LAN or the Internet, so there are no dogfights with your mates or Kamikaze runs into your mother-in-law to be had here. The game does, however, come bundled with a mission builder that allows you to create your own WWII experience, and thus add a bit more life to the game once you've exhausted all of the missions.
