Summary

The turn-based strategy game is a genre that, on paper, seems very specific. But as many of these games show, there is in fact a lot of diversity to be seen within the genre. Games such as Final Fantasy Tactics and Vandal Hearts remain similar to one another, yes, but both have their own slant on rules and combat. And the same is true of LucasArts' Wrath Unleashed for PlayStation 2.

Wrath Unleashed plunges players into a typical role-playing fantasy story in which powerful overlords are fighting for supremacy and struggling to become gods with the power to control all magic. You will play as one such overlord as you command your myriad henchmen in turn-based tactical battles.

And it's in these battles that the heart of the game lies. Taking place in a variety of places - mountains, the sea, plains and lava fields to name but four - Wrath Unleashed appears at first to be a straightforward strategy game at first glance. Before preparing to fight, players must move their characters around a grid with a single objective to defeat all opponents. However, the good part comes when you land on an enemy's spot. This triggers a battle in which players control their character in real-time 3D arenas in what is really a half-hearted beat-em-up. It's largely a case a dodge, then attack to knock down your enemy. And once you have defeated them, you'll move a step closer towards victory.

Wrath Unleashed is a standard strategy offering that has its own unique elements. It may not be your cup of tea, but strategy fans and those who cannot get enough of 'beat 'em ups' are sure to appreciate it.
