After nearly a decade on the shelves of thousands of stores, Sega Saturn's Grim Reaper, the PSone, has finally lost hold of the console market. However, its games continue to live on, and now Sony has released two of its finest classics in an affordable double pack. Those games are WipEout 3 and Destruction Derby 2.
First up, Destruction Derby 2. This is a fine, no-brainer of a racing game that has aged surprisingly well. There are three types of racing, but the clue lies in the title. DD2's game modes don't have an awful lot of variety, but there are plenty of courses to race around and give players a much welcome opportunity to cause as much bother as possible. There are 19 other opponents racing against you, whichever type of race you're in, so the scope for maximum chaos is broad. Very broad. Did we forget to mention that it's great fun too?
WipEout 3, a futuristic racer developed by the now defunct Psygnosis belongs to a long running series of games that helped push Sony's console into mainstream supremacy. Themed around anti-gravity racing, players are charged with the arduous task of piloting an extremely fast form of hovercraft around tight, almost rollercoaster-like circuits. The game's superb handling, track design, and sense of speed placed it leagues above anything that went before it. It was one of Sony's flagship franchises and, aided by the Designer's Republic, became one of the "coolest" video games around.
They may be old, but they're still classics and always worth a few hours of your time.
