Summary

It is the future. You are a young woman named Venus Jones, and you are employed by Blackwater Industries. Something of a planet-hopper, you are an old hand when it comes to organising workforces in the depths of the galaxy. Your next trip into space is going to be your toughest challenge yet, as you find yourself taking charge of the biggest bunch of misfits ever launched into the endless indigo.

Blackwater Industries has deemed Earth as no longer economically viable, thus making space the place to be. In the year 2153, every company in the galaxy is running their own operation somewhere in space, killing off anything endangering the profits, sucking up every valuable resource the planets have to offer, and then moving on. Jones is on one last mission...she hopes! She needs one more successful trip so she can retire. A nice, trouble-free mining assignment is what she's expecting; the reality of the situation is a bit different. None of the colonists Jones encounters on this mission are alike - 20 completely disparate characters have to be reined in somehow. Brawls, arguments, depression and madness are a threat to the assignment right from the outset, and guess what? It's your responsibility to take care of everyone's potential problems. Treat your colonists well - keep them fed and watered, provide some luxuries for them - and they will respond with hard work and loyalty. Neglect them, and, well, you're asking for trouble.

There are two sides to Space Colony. Firstly, you have a crew of unique personalities, each with their own foibles and issues, likes and dislikes, and these individuals need to be managed effectively. Secondly, you must plan and build your base while mining resources, exploring the planet, protecting your colony and making a profit. To succeed in the game, you have to strike a balance between these two aspects. As you progress through the game, your skills, resources, money and personal relationships are carried forward from one mission to the next to build up a strong, unified team.

Space Colony has been touted as The Sims in space, and that about sums it up. Hours of gameplay, out-of-this-world visuals, and some genuinely funny action make Space Colony a must-have for management-sim fans.
