Summary

A long, long time ago, when video gaming was in its infancy, the entertainment of choice generally involved walking from left to right whilst hitting/shooting baddies. One of the more accomplished of such titles - and one that is still fondly remembered today - was Rygar. Rygar saw players take on the role of a pumped-up, pant-wearing hero as he traversed a vast array of forests, rivers and caves, on the quest to kick seven bells out of an assortment of grisly monsters. Developer Tecmo at some point must have decided that the adventure must live on and have subsequently brought this next-gen remake to the PlayStation 2, complete with the pre-requisite 3D makeover. Huzzah!

Taking place on an island in the Mediterranean Sea called Argus, Rygar: The Legendary Adventure, tells the tale of a noble warrior determined to save the Princess Harmonia and bring the Island of Argus back to a state of peace. After ravenous monsters, known as 'Titans' abducted the princess, hero Rygar was subsequently swallowed up by a mysterious underworld. From here he must embark on his quest, travelling across various unique worlds, whilst laying waste to hordes of enemies such as Cyclops, Minotaurs and Chimeras.

As with the original game, one of the key elements to the proceedings is Rygar's unique weapon. Known as the Diskarmor, this weapon basically involves a spiked shield on the end of a chain, which Rygar can hurl at his opponents. This time around, however, the Diskarmor is a great deal more versatile, allowing our hero to accomplish such feats as piercing enemies and swinging them round, slicing through enemies in mid-air, and slamming it to the ground to cause shock-waves. As well as these offensive moves, the weapon can also be used to transport the protagonist from one destination to the next. Quite a piece of kit when you think about it.

Straight from the realms of such cinematic masterpieces as Clash of the Titans and Jason and the Argonauts, Rygar features an adventure of epic proportions, packed full of legendary Greek mythology. The focus is primarily on action-packed gameplay throughout, featuring some genuinely scary adversaries on an extremely grand scale.

Now if only Ray Harryhausen was on the animation team...
