Summary

First released on GameCube towards the end of 2002 (and also making an appearance in Game Boy Advance form) this monster truck-based wreck 'em up now arrives on the PlayStation 2. Retailing at less than £20, the game represents a new movement of lower priced software that's starting to emerge. Let's hope it's a sign of things to come.

The premise of Monster Jam is glaringly straightforward: select from an array of big, loud monster trucks that feature denominations such as Gunslinger, Bulldozer and Predator and battle it out, head-to-head, in savage vehicular combat. Jump in, hold on, and grind it out through interactive arenas that play host to multiple sub-levels, tricks, traps, and surprises. And the winner? The last truck standing, of course.

Each of the vehicles has its own unique signature attack, which comes in handy for surviving the onslaught. More importantly though, is the arsenal of lethal weapons and power-ups, of which there are over 90 in total, in the quest to reap maximum destruction. Ball n' Chain, Liquid Nitro, Buzz Saw and Guided Missiles are just a select few from the sizeable list.

A succession of wins results in a Champ Truck that upgrades with special gold detailing and a 25 percent improvement in performance. In between matches, a trip to the garage, winnings in hand, allows you to buy upgrades such as shocks, engines, tyres and transmissions.

There are six main modes of play to be found within, including Championship, Exhibition, Arcade, Freestyle, and Mini-game. That's a large enough variety to keep things interesting for a while, even if monster truck battling is not your cup of tea.
