Summary

Released just in time for the end of summer 2003, Wanadoo’s footy-on-a-beach simulator takes the sunny sport out of the real world and into the virtual world on Xbox. It’s the unimaginatively titled Pro Beach Soccer.

Carrying the official Beach Soccer WorldWide license, Pro Beach Soccer comes complete with myriad statistics and real-name players at your disposal including former kung fu-footballer Eric Cantona and Amarelle. There are official brands to be spotted and crowd-filled stadiums making for an authentic playing experience and a great atmosphere.

Pro Beach Soccer spans a variety of exotic locations including Rio and Marseilles, and both night and daytime matches are available to the player. The environments boast plenty of detail, great animation, shadows, and the sand in particular looks gorgeous.

Gameplay remains largely the same as any other soccer title, although the players aren’t quite as agile due to the playing surface. The difference here though, is that you can score additional artistic points for imaginative moves and goals. It’s a strange addition, but it works well. Game modes include Arcade, Friendly, the Pro Beach Soccer Tour and several multi-player competitions. It’s comprehensive, there’s no denying that.

With the inclusion of a training mode and simple pick-up-and-play arcade matches, Pro Beach Soccer is an easy game to learn, but one that can challenge even the most ardent footy gamer.
