Summary

Matchbox entered the world of video games a few years ago now, and its presence on consoles is now quite widespread, thanks to a big push from publishing giant THQ. Cross Town Heroes is the latest kid's game to launch on Game Boy Advance and it's all about fire fighting. Nee Naw!

All is not well in the three worlds of Matchbox. There have been numerous incidents and reports of fires, missing puppies and dangerous fireworks that need confiscating before they get into the wrong hands. This is where your brave little firefighting team comes in.

Manoeuvring a miniature fire engine around a selection of quirky village-like environments, you must meet a quota that entails extinguishing fireworks and rescuing lost puppies. There is no time limit, the stage simply ends when you discover and extinguish all fires. The best thing to do, obviously, is to rescue all puppies before dousing that last flame.

At the end of each stage, there is an interval in which you break off from the main game and take part in a number of mini-games with similar objectives. In one side-scrolling mission, you must put out the fires on each building you pass. Miss just one flame and you'll have to do it all over again. Another mini game has you moving at high speed, collecting fireworks and shooting obstacles in a game that resembles something out of a classic arcade shooter.

Kids, and indeed adults, often tire of repetitive gameplay, so the broad spectrum of playing styles in Cross Town Heroes is very welcome and is what ultimately makes it an entertaining game.
