Summary
Fundamentally, World Rally Championship Arcade is precisely what the title suggests - it's a rally simulator that sticks very closely to the arcade-style school of video games. It therefore claims to offer the authenticity and excitement of rally racing combined with the accessibility of an arcade game. So if you can't be bothered with getting bogged down with Colin McRae's technical tweakings, this could well be up your street. Or dirt track, for that matter.
The game features seven official WRC cars - including the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, the Hyundai Accent and the Subaru Impreza - and features 14 official track locations from the 2002 WRC series, each in keeping with the features of their respective real-life locations.
Five game modes are on offer in total. Time Trial, as you may expect, offers players the opportunity to pick a vehicle and race against the clock. Vs Mode allows for that favourite pastime of humiliating your friends on a horizontal-split screen face off. In Super Special Mode, players can challenge 16 other vehicles through a series of consecutive tracks. In this mode the pressure is on, with less time available to complete each subsequent track.
Finally, in Grid Race, players select a vehicle and then race any of the unique tracks against three other competitors. The final goal is to cover the entire grid with gold by completing each track in first place with every official WRC car. From here, bonus tracks and hidden game modes can be unlocked, adding a fair amount of longevity to the proceedings.
WRC Arcade doesn't pretend to offer us all the intricacies and in-depth tech specs that are increasingly being taken for granted these days. What it does offer, however, is a well-rounded, light-hearted rally game, which should breathe a little more life into your dusty old Playstation.
