Summary

We all knew the Xbox was a decent spec PC with a GeForce graphics card in console drag. And following that logic, it would be natural to assume that game genres that have tended to the PC-specific, and followed the Xbox into console territory. Deadly Skies from Konami is the first truly comprehensive and outstanding Flight Sim to be released for the Xbox. With accessible gameplay and a specially designed controller, Deadly Skies is designed for the gaming jet pilots.

This title tries to recreate the tension and excitement of fast paced, high-action aerial dog fights and succeeds. It plays with your emotions especially when you have two bogeys on your tail and you know that a few more hits and will take you down. If you lose your plane in battle, don't expect to find it in the hangar anymore: planes are earned and lost.

Deadly Skies is further testimony to the graphical supremacy of the Xbox. The game delivers beautifully rendered environments that are a pleasure to fly over. A few years ago it would have taken expensive military supercomputers to render equivalent 3D backgrounds. The same level of detail used in the planes has to be seen in action to be truly appreciated: you can see the bolts.

A small complaint would have to be that the audio lets the game down slightly. There's only one sound effect for any one action in the game and they can become slightly annoying after repeated playing sessions. The music is varied but ultimately feels like it's being beamed in from the 1980s. You can always turn it off and blend your own music in with the sound effects.

Deadly Skies has more than 50 missions, so it does well in the longevity stakes, and thus makes it a much better than average air combat experience.
