Not, as you may think, a game based around the adventures of Hollywood hunk Russell Crowe and featuring the relentless beheading of half-naked warriors, The Gladiators is a strategical combat game, based around three contrasting campaigns: Human, Galactic, and Fantasy.
Calling itself a Real Time Action Tactics game, The Gladiators offers a total of 21 single player missions, in which players choose amongst magical powers, future technology or contemporary weapons. Seven universes exist in the game, supplying the locations for the skirmishes, including training, polar, desert, jungle, archipelago, volcanic maps, and Miridion, the game's galactic capital.
Striving as much for an 'arcade' classification as for that of RTS, the game offers simple power-ups and special aptitudes which can be combined to create devastating combos. There's also a pretty straightforward resource management and unit construction system which enhances this.
A great emphasis has been placed on the multiplayer aspect of the game, allowing up to 16 players to do battle over a LAN and/or the Internet. Around 15 dedicated multiplayer maps provide the settings for the variety of available game modes, which include all the usual options like deathmatches and blitz games.
